Swallowed objects are retrieved through the mouth with an endoscope. No incision. Available 24/7 at Innocent Hearts Hospital, because some of these cannot wait until morning.

ProcedurePerformed via upper endoscopy under IV sedation, using forceps, nets, snares or hoods chosen for the specific object.

When to Act Immediately

What Cannot Wait Until Morning

Some swallowed objects pass harmlessly. Others burn through tissue within hours. The difference matters enormously.

Button batteries — within 2 hours

Disc batteries lodged in the oesophagus cause severe chemical burns and can perforate. This is the single most time-critical item on this page. Go to the hospital now.

Sharp objects

Needles, pins, open safety pins, fish and chicken bones can perforate the wall. They are removed endoscopically rather than left to pass.

Magnets, especially more than one

Two magnets in different bowel loops attract through the wall and cause pressure necrosis and perforation.

Food bolus impaction

A lump of food stuck in the oesophagus, often over an undiagnosed stricture. Complete obstruction, unable to swallow saliva, needs urgent removal.

Coins and small objects in children

Common, and usually straightforward — but a coin in the oesophagus still needs removing rather than watching.

Dentures and dental objects

Irregular and often sharp-edged, which makes them poor candidates for passing on their own.

Your Visit

What Happens When You Arrive

In a true emergency this is compressed into under an hour from arrival to retrieval.

Before

Assessment

  • X-ray to locate the object and identify what it is
  • Nothing by mouth from the moment of swallowing
  • Battery or sharp object goes straight to the front of the list
  • IV access placed and vitals monitored
During

Retrieval

  • IV sedation given, or general anaesthesia in small children
  • Endoscope passed to locate the object directly
  • Forceps, net, snare or hood chosen for the object
  • Object withdrawn through the mouth under direct vision
After

Injury check and discharge

  • The site is examined for burns, tears or perforation
  • Same-day discharge, or one night if there is mucosal injury
  • Soft diet for 24 to 48 hours
  • Any underlying stricture found is investigated afterwards

What Gets Retrieved

Objects Dr. Ankit Removes Endoscopically

Almost anything swallowed and still in the upper GI tract can be taken out through the mouth.

Coins and small objects

The commonest paediatric presentation. Removed with a net or forceps under sedation.

Button batteries

The most urgent. Removed within hours to prevent chemical burn and perforation.

Fish and chicken bones

Frequently lodged in the oesophagus. Sharp, so removed under direct vision with a protective hood.

Dentures and dental objects

Irregular and awkward. Retrieved endoscopically, avoiding an operation.

Food bolus impaction

Pushed through or removed piecemeal, and any underlying stricture identified for later dilation.

Needles, pins and magnets

All perforation risks. Removed rather than watched, especially where there is more than one magnet.

A swallowed button battery is a two-hour emergency, not a wait-and-see

Disc batteries lodged in the oesophagus begin causing chemical burns within a couple of hours and can perforate. If a child or adult has swallowed a battery or a sharp object, go immediately to Innocent Hearts Hospital, Nakodar Road and call +91 73470 58754 on the way. Do not induce vomiting, do not give food or water, and do not wait to see whether it passes.

A note on scope

This is an emergency page — Hepatolean has no place in it

For completeness, since it is mentioned across the site: Hepatolean Advance Liver Pro+ is a sugar-free liver-care protein Dr. Ankit formulated for fatty liver patients. It has nothing whatsoever to do with a swallowed object, and if you are on this page in an emergency the only useful sentence here is the phone number, +91 73470 58754. Read about the liver product another day.

Patient FAQs

Foreign Body Removal — Frequently Asked Questions

My child swallowed a coin. Do we need to come in?
Yes, get it assessed. A coin in the stomach often passes on its own, but a coin lodged in the oesophagus needs removing. An X-ray settles which it is in minutes.
What about a button battery?
Go to the hospital immediately — this is the one item on this page where hours matter. Batteries in the oesophagus cause chemical burns within a couple of hours and can perforate. Call on the way.
Will surgery be needed?
In the large majority of cases, no. Objects in the oesophagus and stomach are retrieved endoscopically through the mouth. Surgery is reserved for objects that have perforated or moved beyond endoscopic reach.
Is the procedure painful?
No. It is done under IV sedation, and general anaesthesia is used for small children. Most patients have a mildly sore throat afterwards.
Should I try to make them vomit?
No. Inducing vomiting risks the object lodging in the airway or causing further injury on the way up. Give nothing by mouth and come in.
What if the object has already passed into the intestine?
It is often safe to let it pass naturally, with monitoring. Sharp objects and multiple magnets are the exceptions, and those are assessed case by case.
